Structure of Latching Relay:

The small metal chip that latching relay has can pivot between two terminals. A small magnet is attached and the switch is magnetized. Small coils of wire which are known as “solenoids” are present on both the sides of the magnet. The switch having two outputs at the terminal and input can be used to turn one circuit on and off or for the switching of power between two different circuits.

Operation of Latching Relay:

The relay is controlled by using two coils. A magnetic field is generated when the electric current flows into the coils, turning them off again. The two coils have a suspended magnetic strip subjected to their magnetic field. The switch is pushed from one side to the other when the circuit generates a pulse of electricity through the coils and it’s pushed back to the other terminal when the strip receives a magnetic pulse in the opposite direction, but until that, it stays there.

In simple words, an actuator is a “mover” and it is the part of the switch that comes in contact with the target, physically. In some limit switches, opening and closing of electrical contacts of the switch is done by mounting the actuator to an operating head which results in rotary, linear or perpendicular motions.

It is one of the most popular styles of switch operators. By rotating on an axis, the levers and roller levers actuate centrifugally. ·        Adjustable roller lever:

Adjustable roller levers are available in various diameters and are similar to standard roller lever, the only difference is that their length can be adjusted anywhere between few millimeters to 5 centimeters.


·        Rounded plunger

Plunger head comes in various varieties and sizes and is actuated by applying direct perpendicular to its end.


·        Roller plunger

A roller plunger can be used when a plunger switch is needed but the force won’t be applied directly at 90 degrees. It also changes non-perpendicular force into perpendicular force which can help in actuating the plunger.


·        Rod lever

Just like common levers, rod levers can be actuated radially but these rods are thin and longer in shape and can be longer than 10 centimeters.


·        Laterally rounded plungers

It is different from the standard B-shape in which the plunger and the switch should be perpendicular to each other.


·        Lateral roller plunger:

Just like F-shape, it is also different from C-shape where the plunger is perpendicular to the switch.

It is attached with a key and its operation solely depends upon that key. Once the key is removed from the keyhole, it gets activated and returning the key to the same place will shut it off. Generally, it is used in indoor jams to cut off the power when the door is opened.

Location of mounting

While installing a limit switch, one thing must be understood that they shouldn’t be installed in those areas where there’s a slight chance of disturbance caused by some other operations. They should be mounted firmly and the side where the screws are fixed should be faced outwards so that it can be repaired in any case of failure.

The switches should be installed while facing down the earth, for which the chance of leakage can be avoided on to the seals of operating head due to gravity in any case of liquid invasion.

They should be placed in such a particular angle, where the buildup on the operating head is minimum during any machining chips or debris.
